flu prevention

We are in the midst of the dreaded cold and flu season! Everywhere you turn from social media, to the television as well as going to see friends or family – there is someone either discussing getting over being sick or afraid of getting sick. And to be honest, I dont blame them because getting hit with the flu can leave you out of commission for a bit if you aren’t prepared!

As I sit here today writing this post I am recovering from a cold/cough/scratchy throat that took me a few days to beat! And while I normally would get hit with a pretty bad cold/virus once a year – I am actually happy that this didn’t last too long! That is why I am all about prevention! If you take the necessary steps to prevent a full blown virus then you are ahead of the game!

Sometimes you just get sick. It happens to all of us – that’s life! So I rounded up my tried and true favorite ways to take care of myself and my family to prevent us from catching anything and just in case we do – these will also help when your in the midst of the battle fields.

1). Stay Hydrated

It is so important that you stay hydrated daily. Our bodies are made up of 70% water which means we need to keep replenishing. If you read my previous blog post 7 Ways to Start 2020 Naturally then you know I spoke about drinking filtered water. (Head on over to that post for more details) I drink half of my body weight in ounces of water every day. First thing upon rising in the morning, I add 2 drops of Doterra’s Lemon Essential Oil to 16 oz of filtered water. This will help flush out any toxins in the liver and get the internal organs moving.

2). Essential Oils

All the power to the plants with natures medicine cabinet by using essential oils that will help safe guard your home. I use On Guard Essential Oil in my diffusers to protect the air in our home. Diffusing essential oils is the easiest way to kill airborne bacteria and germs. It benefits all of us including my dog. If you follow me on social media, you will hear me say that I kiss my kitchen good night every night by running On Guard in my diffuser on my main level and also apply 1 drop to my dish sponge so that I can kill any bacteria lurking. I like to wipe everything down with a mixture of essential oils such as On Guard, Lemon, Clove, and/or Eucalyptus with the On Guard Cleaner Concentrate. It is seriously the BEST cleaner and am so happy I made the switch 4 years ago because it cleans everything from counters, floors, toilets, bath tubs, light-switches, door handles, and more! And it beats using mainstream cleaning agents that can cause more harm then good to the endocrine system!

3). Sanitize

Make sure your hands are always clean as a preventative measure to prevent illness. We don’t use conventional anti-bacterial soaps or hand gels because they destroy the healthy bacteria that our bodies need to prevent illness . Therefore, I use doTerra’s On Guard foaming hand wash and Sanitizing mist. The hand wash has the power of doTERRA On Guard essential oil which enhances the cleansing properties to take it to a new level and set it apart from other commercially branded products. I even wash my fruits and vegetables with the foaming hand wash – so its a win win situation for me. The sanitizing mist is in my purse, work bag, and my sons backpack.

4). Gargle

If you find yourself with a scratchy throat like me then this is my favorite thing to do. Use the On Guard mouthwash and add 1 drop of On Guard Esential Oil and 1 drop of Tea Tree Oil to it as well. Swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds and the gargle for another 30 seconds. What I love about the mouthwash is that it does not contain alcohol and has an amazing blend of oils such as Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary.

5). Sleep

Healing takes place the moment our body is at rest. The best way to heal the body and recover is to get enough sleep. At night, start by putting the Do Not Disturb setting on your phone so that you will not be reminded of any incoming stuff that can wait until the morning, take a warm epsom salt bath with lavender oil, or apply essential oils to the soles of the feet to help relax the body (some of my faves include AdaptivBalance, and Console). The most regenerative sleep occurs from 10pm-2am so try your best to be in bed before 10:30 pm.

I have effectively kept us safe in our home for years with these methods and if you are ready to start your journey with your own cold and flu protection kit then click here
